“Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;” Deuteronomy 7:9
I love how we constantly get reminders of who God is while reading scripture. Last week I came across this verse in my Bible study time and I can’t stop thinking about it!
If we are really going to understand this verse we really need to look back at the first 8 verses that come before it.
1) The Lord promised that He would give them the Promised Land, but there are many mighty nations that currently dwell in that land. (v1)
2) The Lord says that He will drive all those people out of the land and give this great land to His people Israel. (v2)
3) The Lord gives them certain rules, “For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.” (Deut. 7:6)
4) The Lord loves this people, and chose to love them, because He made a covenant with their fathers. There was nothing these people could do to earn God’s love nor to remove God’s love from them.
Then we get to verse 9.
“Know therefore..”
Know because of all that we just learned from verses 1-8. There are some things we ought to know.
“..the Lord thy God, He is God..”
There are not many ‘gods’ in the world today. There is only one real and true God, and that is the Lord our God! He is God! Isaiah 43:11 says, “I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.” There is only one God and one Saviour!
“..the faithful God..”
Not only is He God, but He is faithful! God keeps His word. God keeps His promises! Even when we are unfaithful to Him.. He is still the faithful God!
To show how faithful our God is, look at the reminder of the verse! “..which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations..” Thank God! He keeps His covenants. He keeps His promises! Even to 1,000 generations.
